Canal water disinfection ahead of a triathlon

Ahead of the triathlon held at Avlu, Balıkesir in August 2024, a Skytech Water system was used to clean and disinfect the canal water. Following the work carried out before the race, the canal hosted the event’s swim leg.

The need

The canal at Avlu is an open-air body of water, so its quality can change with rainfall and other environmental factors. With the triathlon’s swim leg to be held in the canal, the water had to be cleaned and disinfected before the race. BASKİ’s 2024 activity report also records that turbidity developed in the canal water after rain during the preparation period.

What we did

In the week before the race, a Skytech Water system was used to clean and disinfect the canal water. The system produces a hypochlorous-acid-based disinfectant at the point of use through electrochemical activation, so the disinfectant is prepared where it is needed rather than transported in.

Outcome

Following the work, the canal hosted the event’s swim leg. We assess water quality on every project with analytical data, and share measurement results only with the project’s stakeholders.

Race day

The event’s swim leg took place in the canal at Avlu. The photographs and video were taken at the race venue.

    Records that, during the 2024 championship preparations at the Avlu Balıkesir Recreation Area, hypochlorous acid from an on-site generation device was used to disinfect and clean the canal, and that turbidity in the canal water after rain was cleared.
